Manchester United are the only English side who could realistically sign Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona forward is reportedly closer than he has ever been to leaving the Nou Camp.

Chelsea and Manchester City are both keen on a deal for Messi, whose current contract contains a £200m release clause.

But financial expert Rob Wilson insists only United or Real Madrid could afford to sanction a swoop for the Argentina superstar.

"With the revenue they generate and cash reserves, only United and Real Madrid could pay the fee," he said.
