No Banking Day: Customers set to boycott banks on March 1, 2016

Punch reports that according to the groups, on that day, customers have been asked to boycott all forms of banking activities and banks.

This action is basically a form of protest against the charges introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Speaking to newsmen, the founder of CAFON, Sola Salakosaid "For many years now, customers of banking services have endured excessive charges, unexplainable fees and unfair contracts that only protect the banks but do not protect the consumers.

"Banks debit customers' accounts at will for charges we never agreed to or were not aware of; they charge us for everything; some banks are charging N210 for the use of deposit and transfer forms in their branches!"

Adding that "Thousands of customers have been victims of ATM fraud because the banking industry failed in its duty of educating and informing consumers of the inherent dangers in online banking at commencement.

"These incessant multiple charges are even more prevalent on loan accounts, while many banks have also taken advantage of the CBN's fluctuating forex policy to charge customers exchange rates that far exceed the CBN rates without even notifying the customers of the rates before the transactions."

The group also frowned at the practise where the CBN changes policies, without notifying Nigerians.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in January 2016, instructed all deposit banks and financial institutions operating in the country to place a N50 charge on every bank deposit of N1,000 and above.

This is in line with the Stamp Duties Act and Federal Government Financial Regulations 2009.

Olajumoke Vs Daniel (5.0 CGPA)!! Is Beauty More Rewarding Than The Brain In Nigeria?

In this era where there is an "unjust" pontification on Beauty over the brain, one needs to wonder a little the trends that preceded and made things turn that way.

Its a common thing to see people who made success in the fashion, entertainment, modelling and many other relevant industries that will be placed in the "beauty" category being giving more than enough kudos and attention.

The story of Bread seller turned model Olajumoke and most recently the first Unilag graduate to have hit the much coveted "perfect distinction" of 5.0. Their cases can be said to be a perfect and the most relevant example of the beauty and the brain.

When Olajumoke was discovered, her life took a total turn around. She got the most media attention. She got a new and fresh apartment, was reunited with her hobby, got an interview on CNN, became a motivational speaker, has featured in numerous photo shoots just to remain in the news…and a myriad of other motivations and rewards.

Her benefactor,T.Y bello also featured in the show as many "Nigerians" kept showering praises on her…her act also prompted some celebrities to follow suit in turning around lives..

Yesterday, the University of Lagos unveiled their record setting graduate… Who hit the target by attaining a 5.0 CGPA. This guy failed to get less than an A in all his numerous courses throughout his undergraduate years.

That's a hell of achievement and as usual the media is reporting it but not like that of the Breadseller turned Model's story..Why? That's because Nigerians will become adamant and hypocritic judge instantly cause his success was not inspired by a notable celebrity.

No T.Y Bello, Olamide, Don Jazzy, in his story..Hmm, No interviews on CNN, so far it's been just a mention on NTA. No photoshoots (Lolz..that may not be necessary though), No academic oriented firm or NGO is reporting or commending him "visibly" plus the fact that some folks are commonising this laudable feat and making dumb cracks with it..

Anyway, this is not the first time this beauty and the brain ratings is taking the space and as usual, we all know which will win..

Just that I feel if we want to develop as a nation, I mean if we wanna leave the stage of the developing nations to the developed ones..

We need to reward and promote people with the brain.

Not forgetting that if we fail to honour them, we are deterring hardworking and excellence in the Academic niche and its takes little time for the consequences to manifest in our Nation.

Supreme Court sentences Reverend King to death by hanging.

This just coming in Read:

The supreme court has dismissed the appeal filed by Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, general overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly (better known as Reverend King), challenging the judgment of a Lagos high court sentencing him to death by hanging.

The court upheld the judgment of the lower court senten‎cing him to death. However, it overruled the 20-year death sentence handed down by the high court.
Lagos State Attorney general and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who appeared before the Supreme Court alongside Mrs. Idowu Alakija, the Director of Public Prosecution and other Senior Counsel in the State, urged the court to dismiss the appeal and uphold the judgment of the lower court. Ezeugo was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder. He pleaded not guilty to the allegation but was sentenced to death by the then Justice Joseph Oyewole of Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on January 11, 2007 for the murder of one of his church members, Ann Uzoh.

Al - Jazeera News :U. S and China calls for tougher sanctions on North Korea

You know Enekem.com always bring the news closer to you, here is another exclusive.

The United States and China have presented a draft
resolution to the United Nations Security Council for stronger
sanctions against North Korea in response to Pyongyang's
latest nuclear test and rocket launch.
Samantha Power, US envoy to the UN, said the draft, which
for the first time would subject cargo ships leaving and
entering North Korea to mandatory inspections, would
significantly increase pressure on Pyongyang.
"It is a major upgrade and there will be, provided it goes
forward, pressure on more points, tougher, more
comprehensive, more sectors. It's breaking new ground in a
whole host of ways," Power said, before heading into a
closed meeting in which the US planned to circulate the
draft to all 15 council members.

The draft is the result of an agreement between the US and
China, North Korea's main ally, whose involvement signals
a policy shift with regard to its neighbour. The council is
expected to vote on the draft over the weekend.
"We are opposed to any nuclear testing and the launch
testing of ballistic missile technology and we hope this
resolution will help to prevent further occurrences of this
nature," China's Ambassador Liu Jieyi said, following the
meeting.
However, China did not want to exhort too much pressure
because a collapse of the North Korean system could lead
to "an expanded South Korea on China's border with its US
allies there as well," Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, reporting
from Seoul, said.
"The question is, as always, whether North Korea will get
around these sanctions and also the level of enforcement of
such sanctions. That has been extremely difficult to pin
down on that border between China and North Korea," he
said.
"What is significant though is that we have had reports from
the northern side of that border saying that things have
changed at least in the short term. North Korean ships not
coming into port, Chinese trucks coming back from North
Korea empty."
Troy Stangarone, a senior director for congressional affairs
and trade at the Korean Economic Institute, told Al Jazeera
that Pyongyang was likely to strike back.
"We should expect North Korea to try to respond with some
kind of provocation. Most likely this will be something in
terms of cyber warfare or some other area where it is hard to
identify North Korea as an actual perpetrator," he said,
speaking from Washington DC.
Draft details
According to Power, the sanctions would prohibit the sale of
small arms and other conventional weapons to North Korea,
closing a loophole in earlier resolutions.
Power said the sanctions would also limit and in some
cases ban exports of coal, iron, gold, titanium and rare earth
minerals from North Korea, and would ban countries from
supplying aviation fuel, including rocket fuel, to the country.
The resolution also imposes financial sanctions targeting
North Korean banks and assets, and bans all dual-use
nuclear and missile-related items.
Items such as luxury watches, snowmobiles, recreational
water vehicles and lead crystal were also added to a long
list of luxury goods that North Korea is not allowed to import.
North Korea started off the new year with what it claims was
its first hydrogen bomb test on January 6 and followed that
up with the launch of a satellite on a rocket on February 7
that was condemned by much of the world as a test of
banned missile technology.
Over the past 20 years, North Korea has conducted four
nuclear tests and launched six long-range rockets - all in
violation of Security Council resolutions.

Former PDP national chairman arrested by EFCC

Uche Secondus former national party chairman of PDP have been arrested by the economic financial crime commission (EFCC)

Read via Punch;
Investigations by one of our correspondents showed that Secondus was picked up over statements made by Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited, Mr. Jide Omokore.

Omokore was arrested by the commission last week over investigation into fuel subsidy payments when Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke was the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

It was gathered that Omokore mentioned Secondus' name during his interrogation over the fuel subsidy payments and other oil deals.

It was also learnt that names of some prominent members of the party, including a former chairman during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan featured during the interrogation.

The source at the commission said that Secondus ought to have been arrested long ago, but was left because he was piloting the affairs of the party.

"He is being interrogated over 23 exotic cars, worth N302m  he and some other people allegedly collected from Omokore. The cars included Mercedes G63 and Range Rover Autobiography," the source said.

Ebola survivor nurse, transfer to a London hospital

The Guardian newspaper shares this story Read :

A BRITISH nurse who was twice successfully
treated after contracting Ebola in Sierra Leone
in 2014 was yesterday admitted to a special
isolation ward in London for a third time,
health officials said.
Pauline Cafferkey, who voluntarily went to the
West African country to treat Ebola patients,
was initially admitted to a hospital in Glasgow
and later transferred to the Royal Free Hospital.
She was flown from Glasgow to London in an
isolation bed on a Royal Air Force (RAF)
Hercules military transport plane, AFP
reported.
"We can confirm that Pauline Cafferkey is being
transferred to the Royal Free Hospital due to a
late complication from her previous infection by
the Ebola virus," the clinic said in a statement.
"She will now be treated by the hospital's
infectious diseases team under nationally
agreed guidelines."
"The Ebola virus can only be transmitted by
direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of
an infected person while they are symptomatic
so the risk to the general public remains low,"
it added.
Cafferkey was treated twice at the Royal Free
Hospital, Britain's only isolation ward for the
lethal disease, after suffering an "unusual
complication" of her first infection.
Cafferkey was diagnosed with Ebola in
December 2014 after returning to Glasgow from
Sierra Leone.
She suffered a relapse in October 2015, when
the virus caused her to become critically ill
with meningitis before she made a full
recovery.
"It is very sad to hear that Cafferkey has once
again been admitted to hospital," said Derek
Gatherer from Lancaster University.
"The meningitis that Cafferkey suffered from at
the end of last year is one of the most serious
complications of all, as it can be life-
threatening.
"She was unlucky enough to be one of only a
handful of patients in whom it has been seen,"
he added.

Women who have more sexual partners are less likely to have oral cancer

Courtesy of news Naija, Read :

– Researchers say they may develop a better immunity to
oral HPV strain
– This is a common STI which can lead to different types
of cancer
Women who have sex with with lots of partners are less
likely to get cancer of the mouth and throat. Unfortunately,
the same sexual behaviour is dangerous for men — the
more oral sexual partners they have the more chances
they develop throat, neck, head and other cancers .
These cancers are linked to the human papillomavirus
(HPV), which is the most common infection transmitted
through sexual contact. Researchers released this
information at the annual conference of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science in
Washington.

They also found that middle aged white men are at
particularly high risk compared to other races. Dr
Gypsyamber D'Souza, the associate professor at
Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health, explained the findings:
"Performing oral sex is very common among men and
women but there are stark differences in oral HPV infection
and the rate of cancer. Comparing men and women with the
same number of sex partners, a man is much more likely to
get infected with oral HPV than a woman.
Women that had a lot of previous sexual partners were
actually less likely to get infected with an oral HPV
infection. They may mount a more robust immune response
and be less likely to become infected. It seems that for men
this immune response is likely smaller.

disease which is not Lassa fever (photos)
Men are not only more likely to become infected, but our
research also shows that once infected they are less likely
to clear these infections than women, further contributing
for the cancer risk."
To put it simply, those women who have a greater number
of vaginal sex partners mount an immune response to
vaginal HPV virus, thus preventing the body from
catching an oral HPV that could trigger various types of
cancer.
