Is This The Change? Naira Drops To 280 Against Dollar
Don't let any Aboki cheat you o. Lol
The naira continued its free fall on Thursday, crashing to 280 against the United States dollar at the parallel market. The greenback sold for N269 on Wednesday.
The naira, which had been trading around 241 and 243 against the greenback for a long time, began a steady decline about three weeks ago when the Central Bank of Nigeria stopped the sale of foreign exchange to over 1,600 Bureaux De Change operators due to improper documentation.
On Wednesday, however, the CBN cut the amount it sold to each of the 2,270 BDCs that participated in the weekly forex sale to $10,000, down from the $30,000 it sold to them last week.
While the central bank sold $84.5m to the BDCs last week, the amount was reduced to $23m on Wednesday.
According to analysts, the significant cut in forex supply to the BDCs coupled with the existing huge unmet demand at the CBN official window has led to the recent pressure on the naira at the parallel market.
Businesses have been struggling to access dollars as the CBN rations the greenback to preserve the country's external reserves, which stood at $29.46bn as of December 15.
Analysts said the continued fall of the naira against the US currency at the black market could cause further inflation and affect businesses negatively with much backlash for the economy.
At the official interbank market, the currency has been pegged since February and closed at 196.97 on Wednesday.
Economic and financial experts have linked the continued fall of the naira at the parallel market to several reasons, ranging from the administrative controls imposed by the central bank to the speculative demand for the dollar by individuals and businesses.
They, however, said that unless the CBN took major steps to address the situation as soon as possible, the naira might be headed for 300 against the dollar.
A number of economists, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday, said the devaluation of the naira was inevitable.
"Naira at 280 against the dollar at the parallel market is more speculative than being market-driven. The reason for this continued fall can be linked to a combination of factors. Well, the naira should find its equilibrium," the Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Limited, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, said.
Rewane had said that the devaluation of the naira was inevitable considering the margin between the value of the currency at the official market and the parallel market.
The Managing Director, Eczellon Capital, an investment bank and research firm, Mr. Diekola Onaolapo, said that considering the continued pressure on the local currency, "devaluation of the naira seems almost inevitable; we may need to devalue."
He, however, said the current pressure on the currency might also be linked to the end-of-the-year rush, which bordered on foreigners having the need for dollars to travel out of the country for vacation.

Christian College Professor Suspended For Wearing Headscarf In Solidarity With Muslims
professor at Christian college in the United States has been placed on leave for wearing a headscarf to show solidarity with Muslims.
Larycia Hawkins, a Christian and an associate professor of political science at Wheaton College in Chicago, was suspended on Tuesday. She however, defended her action, saying it was a demonstration of her own faith and that she began wearing a hijab to counter "vitriolic" rhetoric against Muslims in recent weeks.
The college said in a statement Tuesday that it placed her on leave because of statements she made about similarities between Islam and Christianity on social media.
"In response to significant questions regarding the theological implications of statements that Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Larycia Hawkins has made about the relationship of Christianity to Islam, Wheaton College has placed her on administrative leave, pending the full review to which she is entitled as a tenured faculty member," the statement read. The school insists that Hawkins' suspension doesn't reflect on her desire to wear the headscarf, but rather the explanation she gave as to why she was wearing the headscarf.
The Chicago Tribune reports Hawkins said on social media that Christians and Muslims share the same God, despite some differences between the religion.
"I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book," Hawkins wrote on Friday. "And [as] Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God."While Hawkins had received some support from her colleagues, Denny Burk, a biblical studies professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. told the newspaper that Hawkins didn't clarify her statement well enough and claimed she denied Christian teachings.
"We're people of the book, but our books are very different. They're witnessing to two different ways of salvation. The Bible is witnessing to Jesus Christ, the son of God. That's unique of all the world religions, and that uniqueness was what I thought was missing from what she said," Burk added.Hawkins' suspension will last through the spring semester and sparked protests on the Wheaton College campus from students who called for her reinstatement, according to the Tribune. Christian leaders also supported Hawkins at a news conference Wednesday.
Hawkins also told the news conference "I affirm the creeds of the church," and added that she hopes for an amicable resolution with the college.

Apga Chieftain Calls Nnamdi Kanu 'Hero' #Biafra #Dasukigate
Elder statesman and Igbo leader, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka has hailed the release from detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the Director of Radio Biafra and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
He described the development as a great news as it will douse the already heated tension surrounding his detention.
Ezeonwuka, who is a member of the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) while speaking in Onitsha, told newsmen that Kanu's discharge from the case leveled against him by the DSS, was a landmark victory for justice, Ndigbo and the masses who were agitating for their right in a way they decided to do it.
He said by so doing, the court had once more proven to be the last hope of the common man.
He said, "Kanu has emerged as a hero of Ndigbo and nobody can take that away from him. His agitation leading to his arrest and detention has made our voice to be heard, opened our wound to the glaring notice of the people that matters in Nigeria and I believe that something good will follow the issues he raised, therefore the issues surrounding him have to be given serious attention.
In my capacity as Ogirisi Igbo, I want to advice him to listen to our elders' advice on how to address our problems. I'm sure he must have realized that we are all behind him now, so let him take our advice."
According to the APGA chieftain "the issue of Biafra is all about the wellbeing of the Igbo man in the Nigerian setting and Biafra is as good as a dream come true when the roads are fixed, when the lights shine uninterrupted, when jobs are available for youths, when there is enough federal presence in the southeast, when the federal appointments are balanced among the geopolitical zones and when the Igbo man is president. That is Biafra in my opinion."

Teenage Girl Accuses Graduate That Posted Her Nudes Online Of Rape (photos)
Gbemisola
Lagos State Police Command is investigating a case of a 19-year-old girl, Gbemisola, who claimed to have been raped by a university graduate, identified only as Kunle.
Gbemisola told PUNCH Metro that after the rape, Kunle, 24, began to blackmail her, threatening to release her nude photos if she refused to send him some money.
After the victim reportedly yielded to the threat two times, he allegedly demanded another payment of N10, 000.
When Gbemisola refused, the suspect was said to have posted the nude photos on the Internet,
including her phone number.
The victim was said to have been called by some of her friends and family members who saw the pictures.
The incident happened in Agiliti Estate, Ketu area of Lagos State.
Afolabi, a caterer, told PUNCH Metro that she met the suspect about three weeks ago.
She said:
"I was going home that Friday when he stopped me on the road and said he wanted to be my boyfriend. I told him I was already in a relationship with someone else, and that I was not interested.
He said he would not mind being a mere friend. We exchanged contacts and I left for my house. I always post pictures of my new cakes on Whatsapp and he saw one of them and said he liked it. He said he wanted me to make a cake for him. I agreed.
"He asked where I was and I said I was at my sister's shop. He said we should meet at the junction because the cake he wanted was on his phone and he would want to show me what he wanted."
She explained that when they met, the suspect claimed to have forgotten the phone at his parent's home in Agiliti Estate, and asked her to follow him home.
She alleged that no sooner had they got to the house than Kunle locked the door and raped her.
"I blamed myself for my predicament and I decided to bear the shame in silence.
"However, on Monday, which was three days after the rape, he called me, saying if I refused to meet him, I would regret it because he had my nude photos and he would post them on the Internet.
I begged him and he said I should send him a N1,500 recharge card, which I did. Two days later, he demanded another N2, 000 recharge card, and I sent it.
Later, he said I should send him N10,000. I was angry and dared him to do whatever he wanted to do."
Gbemisola, who finished secondary school last year, said she was surprised when she saw her nude photos, with her phone number, on the Internet. She said the incident had affected her psychologically.
The victim's sister, Ramota, said she got to know about the incident from a family friend who saw the nude pictures. She said:
"My younger sister said she saw Gbemisola's nude photos on someone's phone. I was told she wanted to hurt herself due to the shame and disgrace it had brought on her.
I followed some other family members to Kunle's parents' house and they promised to make him delete the photos. But we never knew the photos had gone viral."
It was learnt that the case was first reported at the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, before a community leader, Yomi Odegbami, took the matter to the Ketu Police Station.
Odegbami asked the government to bring the culprit to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.
"The police and the government should urgently wade into this case before other young girls fall victim of this wicked man," he said.
Kunle, when contacted by PUNCH denied the allegation, saying he was in a relationship with Gbemisola.
He said the nude photos were not circulated by him, adding that the 19-year-old originally sent the photos to him during their conversation on Whatsapp. He said:
"I am a graduate of a private university in Osun State and I know what I am doing. We met a few weeks ago and we started chatting on Whatsapp. I asked her to send me some of her pictures when she travelled to Ondo, and she said, 'Is it my breasts?', and I said yes.
After that, I asked for the pictures of her private parts, and she sent them to me. I did a picsmix of the photos and jokingly sent it to her. I have since deleted the photos from my phone. The only regret I have was that I showed them to my friends.
The first time she visited me, we didn't do anything. It was the second time she came that we made love. I have all our chats as evidence that she sent those pictures to me.
"She came with her relatives to my house and damaged my laptop which I bought for over N90,000 and now, they are going to the press. I know my rights and if this is the way they want it, no problem."
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, said he would call back, but he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report, Punch reports.
