Governor Okorocha Sacks 3,000 Civil Servants (See Why)

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has summarily sacked over 3,000 workers in 19 parastatals, agencies and departments, as he stopped their salaries with effect from January 4, 2016.

A Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, confirmed that over 3,000 workers were affected in the sack.
Vanguard gathered that "the current action of the governor, which not only came on the heels of last Wednesday's labour protest in Owerri, headed by the National President of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba, is also closely linked with the recent obnoxious form which the administration forced Imo workers to sign before collecting their unpaid salaries."

According to a statement by the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Sir Jude Ejiogu, the workers caught in the sack-web include the Imo Water Corporation, Imo Cattle Market, Imo Sports Council, Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission, ENTRACO, Imo Marketing Company, Imo Consumer Protection Council, Hospital Management Board, and its headquarters staff.

Others are Imo Tourism Board, Imo Blue Lake of Treasure, Imo State Investment Promotion Agency, Imo Job Centre, Imo Water Development Agency, IWADA, Imo Library Board, Imo Agricultural Loans Board, Imo Livestock, Imo Poverty Alleviation Agency, Imo Palm Plantation, Agricultural Development Programme, ADP and Small Holders Unit.

Government explained that the action followed what it called "a productivity audit recently conducted in the parastatals, agencies and departments."

The statement added that "Government is satisfied that it is no longer in public interest to keep running these agencies, parastatals and departments with huge cost on public revenue and no services to the public, under the present economic realities."

Government promised that the affected workers would be communicated to in due course, about the administration's next line of action regarding possible re-engagement, after the on-going concessioning exercise affecting the agencies, departments and parastatals.

The affected staff were ordered to handover all government property in their possession to their chief executives within 48 hours, while civil servants on secondment to any of the affected agencies, parastatals and agencies, were deployed to their parent ministries.

Oshiomhole: Why I Won’t Reconcile With Igbinedion

Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole of has said that he may not reconcile his differences with the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, because the latter allegedly disrespected his office by seeing himself as bigger than the entire Edo State.

Oshiomhole spoke when he visted Chief Igbinedion's ancestral home in Okada, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, where he commissioned class room blocks at Iguomo and a three-storey office complex which was named after the governor.

The projects were executed by the chairman of the council, Mrs Lucy Omagbon. The governor, who was responding to a plea by a leader of the community that the governor should reconcile with Chief Igbinedion, said that he had no problem with Chief Igbinedion but that his duty as governor of the state was to protect both the rich and the poor, adding that it was in the discharge of such duties that he had issues with Igbinedion.

According to him,

"I heard the Chairman talking about my quarrel with Igbinedion. I have no problem with anybody. There are only four levels of government, federal, state, local and traditional institution. The House of Igbinedion does not belong to any of this. He is a chief and I respect him as a chief but he must respect constituted authorities, the office of the governor of Edo State. This governor cannot be harassed, he cannot be blackmailed. And I stand ready to defend that office."

I just read on a Kenyan website that sexual perversion in Kenya has reached alarming levels. Things are so bad now that a woman cheating on her husband is no longer news.

These days, what makes news is when a woman snatches her daughter's husband, or a daughter sleeps with her father. Rarely does a month pass before such depraved acts are reported by the media.

Recently, a university employee admitted in an interview with Parent magazine that her daughter snatched her husband.

Mercy Igoki, a 48-year-old senior assistant registrar told her bizarre story and claims she has forgiven both her daughter and her husband for the pain they caused her. She said:

"I share the circumstances under which my marriage split up hoping it will inspire someone to start her own journey to forgiveness and restoration, as opposed to bitterness, anger and death," she says.

In 2006, while working as a teacher and counsellor in a local high school, Mercy met an orphan girl. She took her home and adopted the girl who was three years older than Mercy's first born.

Mercy says the girl bonded very well with her family and her problems began when she had to resign from her job to recover from an accident that left her with multiple fractures.

"I enrolled for an undergraduate degree in education in Meru. I would be away from home sometimes up to three weeks or longer at a time because of my studies.

It was while travelling back from one of these trips in 2008, just after my daughter had finished high school, that I received a phone call from one of my neighbours. She told me, 'Just know that girl you are living with is not your daughter but your co-wife. I was shocked."

Mercy says she decided to investigate and discovered clandestine correspondence between them.

"In anger, I confronted them and to my shock, my husband blamed me for the affair, saying I had brought the girl to him," says Mercy. She has since forgiven them.

Not surprisingly, cases of older women snatching husbands from their daughters, or daughters snatching men from their mothers are hardly reported due to embarrassment and stigma. Experts say such deviant behaviour is among many modern ills placing the traditional family unit at risk.

Mid last year, when an Embakasi woman, Hannah Mwenje, caught her husband and mother in her matrimonial bed one morning, her tears sent the nation reeling in shock, particularly because she was forced to endure the indignity of watching them.

"It was a Sunday. I went to church with my two children. My husband was still sleeping when I left.

During the church service, my baby became restless so I decided to leave before the service was over because he was making so much noise and disrupting the service.

I got home and found the door open. I could hear voices from the bedroom," she says, pausing to describe their two-room house in Pipeline, Embakasi.

My husband heard me walk in and came out of the bedroom naked. He dragged me into the bedroom and I found my mother naked in bed. I was dazed," Mwenje recalls. She says the two went ahead and finished their 'business' as she stood shell-shocked watching them.

When they finished, my mother told me that a man like my husband didn't deserve a woman like me. She then dressed and gave my one-year-old son five shillings to go buy sweets. They left with my husband as I collapsed on the floor," says Mwenje.

Mwenje wanted to kill herself but she didn't have the energy to stand up. She stayed on the floor for hours before she sent her three-year-old elder son to call a neighbour.

"The neighbour came and helped me stand up. I had no strength. She took me to her house and took care of my children," says Mwenje.

Her husband, who is a plumber, and her mother went and started living together.

I need help . My boyfriend is so cute and drives a Range Rover sport. He is a business man, he sells phones and laptops, but he does not have a house cause he claims Abuja is expensive.

My boyfriend still lives with his friends in a self contained apartment where they are up to 6 of them. He said they pay 20k each to raise the rent. Every sex we had was in my house, apparently he lives with me cause most of his things are in my house.

I was very very ok with it since I work and we both love each other. He just proposed yesterday and I accepted , but am so scared . My fear is, where will we live? How will he organise the wedding when he can't even afford a house?

So I confronted him with my fears and his reply to me was - 'baby, why did you think I want to marry you ? I want to marry you cause you are a strong woman and I know you will support me. Baby if I don't have a house, you have a house, if I can't pay for our wedding, baby you are working, if I fall, you should hold me. That is why 2 will become one.

I was so, so shocked.

He further said we will maintain the self contained I live in now and share the rent, and as for our wedding we will make it small and portable with the contribution we will get.
