A baby astonished doctors in India when it was born with a rare condition known as 'Mermaid syndrome.'
Tragically the newborn, whose legs had fused together to resemble the mythical creature, only lived for about ten minutes.
Dr Vandana Arya, 35, a gynaecologist at the hospital who delivered the baby, said: 'I have never seen a case like this before.
'We have seen congenital disorders amongst children born with deformities, but this was an extremely rare case.
'The baby was born in a fish-like body, and had its hands spread like fins, which made this case even more unique.
'The upper body of the baby was absolutely functional but the lower body was not developed.'
Dr Arya said the condition meant it was impossible to determine the gender of the baby.
Sirenomelia, also known as 'Mermaid syndrome' is a life-threatening illness, marked by the rotation and fusion of a sufferer's legs.
The rare congenital deformity causes what looks like a single limb, resembling a fish tail, in the womb.

A baby with 15 fingers and 16 toes have been born to shocked Chinese parents who say there were no indications of his deformities on pre-natal scans.
The three-month-old boy, nicknamed Honghong, has 31 fingers and toes instead of the normal 20. Incredibly, he also has two palms on each hand, with no thumbs, according to People's Daily Online.
His parents are now desperate to find medical treatment for him as doctors at their local hospital in Hunan, central China, tells them surgery will be extremely difficult.
Honghong has an extreme case of polydactyly.
The medical condition, where children are born with extra fingers or toes, appears in approximately one in 1,000 cases. But to have so many extra digits is extremely rare.
According to the report, Honghong's mother also suffers from polydactyly and has extra digits on both her hands and feet.
She was worried about passing it on to her child so she had multiple examinations at hospitals in Shenzhen, south China.
When she was half way through her pregnancy, she even visited Futian District Maternity Hospital in Shenzhen to get a four-dimensional ulltrasound. She was again told that the baby had no deformities.
But the couple, who live in rural Hunan, were horrified to find that their son's polydactyly is even more severe than that of his mother.
Both of Honghong's feet have eight toes while one of his hands has eight fingers and the other, seven.
Liu Hong, a professor at Hunan Provincial People's Hospital for Pediatric Orthopedics, told Honghong's father Zou Chenglin that surgery will be extremely difficult.
The boy is currently too young for anaesthetics but he will need to undergo surgery between six months and a year before the bones set.
Unfortunately for the impoverished family, the surgeries are likely to cost hundreds of thousands of Yuan (tens of thousands of pounds) - too much for them to bear.
Now, the three-month-old boy's parents are desperately trying to find money to fund the treatment for their son, DailyMail reports.

A 42-year-old man, Kazeem Bamidele, accused of being a major buyer of stolen phones in Lagos state has been arrested by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command.
A dependable police source said that the suspect was the second vice chairman of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers' (NURTW), Ajegunle Unit, Vanguard reports.
"The suspect has over 52 boys in Lagos State who steal and sell "clean phones" to him. "He confessed to have bought over 4,256 mobile phones from robbers, pickpockets and one-chance gangs operating in the state," the source said.
The command's spokesperson, SP Oladapo Badmos, who confirmed the arrest, said that the suspect, popularly known as "Elewure'' was arrested after the arrest and interrogation of two other suspects.
Badmos said that the two suspects, who were also receivers of stolen phones, were arrested in Kogi State, in connection with abduction and robbery cases in Lagos State.
"The operatives had upon returning from a week-long investigation in Port Harcourt, Enugu and Kogi States, swung into action by arresting "Elewure'' in his shop at Boundary Market, Ajegunle.
The suspect was fingered to have been the seller of two Blackberry Z10 phones and a CAT phone collected recently from victims of robbery and abduction cases in the metropolis.
"He claimed to always receive no fewer than 38 `clean phones' in a week. He confessed to have been in the business for more than two years," the command's spokesperson said.
According to Badmos, the suspect also confessed that he sold the stolen phones at boundary market, Ajegunle, where he has his office and shop.
"He claimed he knew that the phones he sold were stolen ones,'' she said.
The spokesperson said that as at the time of arrest, five stolen mobile phones were found in the possession of Bamidele.
Badmos said that the suspect had been assisting the police in its investigations, adding that two commercial buses suspected to be used for robbery operations had been impounded. She said that the suspect had been transferred to the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja for further investigation.
