The New York reports that Harriet Tubman is going to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Jackson will remain on the backside of the $20 bill however. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is set to make the announcement
Lew will also announce the plan to include women's suffrage leaders on the back of the $10 bill, including civil rights era leaders and other important moments of American history onto the $5 bill.
The changes come as a result of Lew's proposal to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill with a woman. The proposal received tons of backlash from Hamilton supporters who suggested that Jackson be replaced instead, because of his role in moving Native Americans from their land. The new designs should be ready by 2020, however Treasury will probably ask the Federal Reserve to speed the process up and have the bills available as soon as possible. So far the idea of putting Tubman on the bill has resulted in some positive feedback. Senator Jeanne Shaheen said, "If this is true, great news! Tubman on the $20 is the right call. The redesign needs to happen as soon as possible. Women have waited long enough."
